with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

Improve your team's competitiveness using first touch techniques from former Canadian and USA national team coach Shiv Jagday. You'll learn how to control the ball and force defenders to react to your actions instead of influencing them.

An effective "first touch" of the ball often times ensures successful passing and receiving, ball movement, advancement of the ball and success when facing the defense.

Coach Jagday spends minimal time on individual drills, preferring to work on improving first touch skills within game-like situations. He expertly divides the field and player positions into interlocking, triangular groups of three. From this format, players practice passing and receiving, and build plays for moving the ball down field. As players progress, Jagday increases the space between players thereby challenging their ability and better simulating game situations.

After covering the basics, Coach Jagday discusses how to receive a pass under pressure and draw or entice a defender, then make a pass to the overlapping teammate within the appropriate triangle of players. He demonstrates how focusing on individual technique and delaying a pass, allows the receiver to adjust the leading angles and prepares them to make the next positive move.

The best field hockey players in the world use their first touch to create time and space and to place the defender at a disadvantage. Coach Jagday's first touch techniques and his strategy for dividing the playing field will improve your team's first touch skills and ultimately their level of competitiveness.

Nine-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Enza Steele presents guidelines for developing well-structured, complete field hockey practice. Coach Steele takes you through a full practice, hitting all of the key areas you need to develop a successful team.

Coach Steele highlights the importance of planning your practices to get the most out of the limited time you have with your players. She does a masterful job of walking you through the areas of her practice. Beginning with a smart board explanation and then on-field demonstrations, Steele presents a practice plan adaptable to any level of play.

In this DVD, you will learn how to prepare and execute an efficient, purposeful practice covering the following skill sets:

  • Pre-practice warm up and team building exercises
  • Ball control using passing and receiving techniques
  • Goalie workouts using multiple offensive attacks
  • Defensive clearings
Coach Steele presents a variety of offensive drills designed to prepare players for game situations and build skills. Throughout the drills players are consistently encouraged to focus on good ball control. Whether passing or receiving the ball, proper ball handling skills are a direct function of disciplined footwork and player positioning in reference to the ball.

Once players can effectively control the ball, they are challenged to perfect longer, timed passes which in turn provides increased scoring opportunities from a wider variety of positions on the field. Each drill initiates with passing the ball and typically concludes with a shot on goal.

Multiple fast-paced passing and shooting drills will provide your players with increased ball touches. Shooting on goal at the conclusion of the drills adds an important element that players work hard achieve. Players move through the drills focusing their efforts to end their drill in a goal. This additionally ensures the goalie will experience many different kinds of shots from different shooters.

Conditioning and agility training are accomplished by using competitive activities that are fun for players and encourage team building. As players compete against each other, their fundamental field hockey skills can be evaluated and coached as they play. Players natural competitive nature ensures that they will enthusiastically participate in these well thought out exercises.

These competitive activities and games will give you ideas on how to get your team in great game condition, as well as add some variety to your practices to make it more enjoyable for your players.

FHD-04389A: with Ainslee Lamb, Boston College Head Coach;
has served as the head coach for the U.S. National Team at the U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In this dynamic presentation, Boston College Head Coach Ainslee Lamb concentrates on the principles necessary to win 2v1 matchups. Using whiteboard explanations and on-field demonstration, Coach Lamb shares practice drills that cover the foundational skills needed to create and win 2v1 situations.

One of field hockey's most fundamental forms is the 2v1 contest. Beginning with simple ball-handling drills, Coach Lamb shares her offensive philosophy, which is built on sound foundational skills. By adding incremental progressions, she builds an aggressive offensive strategy that creates 2v1 offensive opportunities.

Coach Lamb offers a highly detailed explanation of the responsibilities of both the ball carrier and the off-ball player. She shares skills and theory that will enable offensive players to effectively exploit the 2v1 game. Beginning with basic concepts and progressing through detailed offensive strategies, your players will quickly develop into an efficient and purposed offensive team. At the heart of being able to master the 2v1 game are these three essential ball-carrier skills:

  • Know your defender's position and intentions
  • Know your teammates' position
  • Identify the "dangerous space" that you and your teammate will use against the defense

The off-ball carrier has their own set of responsibilities. The importance of communication, vision, maintaining a presence in a passing lane as well as being positioned in the "dangerous space" are some of the core concepts of this 2v1 strategy. Considerable detail is provided so that all players will be able to develop their skills and understanding of field hockey, which will enable them to make better decisions and become a formidable offensive threat.

Coach Lamb begins every drill with the offensive player engaging the defender. The defender's reaction drives the decision of the offense. By forcing the defender to react to the ball carrier, the off-ball player exploits the weakness of the defender's inability to cover two offensive players. These same basic scenarios are presented from different field positions and from different angles of attack. Through these various presentations, Coach Lamb details a great deal of offensive direction and strategy. As she guides players through these drills, she constantly reinforces proper technique and challenges players to sharpen their awareness and react to the details the defender provides-details that are often overlooked by most offensive players

Most importantly, Coach Lamb shares a philosophy that players can apply to their on-field decision-making. This video will prove to be an invaluable tool to increase both players' and coaches' "Offensive Field Hockey IQ."

has served as the head coach for the U.S. National Team at the U17, U19 and U21 levels.

In this dynamic presentation, Boston College Head Coach Ainslee Lamb shares 11 drills for developing a shooting zone philosophy that considers not only the shooter but where the ball is coming from as well. Learn how to create shooting opportunities and develop a more sophisticated offense that's harder for goalies to make plays against by getting your shooter and passer working together.

Using whiteboard explanations and on-field demonstration, Coach Lamb explains the importance of creating a shooting zone. She also defines the expectations for each athlete when they are in the shooting zone and approaching it. In addition, she shares drills that cover a variety of game-like shooting situations. In this DVD, you'll learn:

  • the importance of creating a shooting zone and the expectations of players when they're in it
  • shooting opportunities developed from deflections
  • how to train players to score off rebounds
  • how to use reverse stick, sweeps and traps to control the ball and create shooting opportunities
  • to utilize back space from defensive positions to score

Coach Lamb also covers the offensive strategies and expectations that guide the action of players when they attack from the top of circle as well as how they can execute early and develop the timing they need to be a serious offensive threat.

Listen in as players are given detailed tips to improve their shooting. Coach Lamb encourages awareness of each shooter's specific style so they can fine-tune their own development. She focuses on fundamentals like winding up to shoot the ball, adjusting footwork, creating momentum and torque and keeping the stick close to ball while preparing to shoot.

Coach Lamb provides enough detail and layers in each drill to provide value across all ages and skill levels. You'll discover something new every time you return to her DVD. By practicing the details specific to each shot and then building a progressive drill that allows the athlete to see where each shot is most effective, you get a comprehensive instructional DVD that will help players at all levels improve their shooting ability.

with Tara Danielson, Stanford University Head Coach;
3x NorPac Coach of the Year, member of the U.S. National Field Hockey Team (1998-2005)

and Steve Danielson, Stanford University Assistant Coach;
member of the U.S. National Field Hockey Team (1989-2010), member of Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games

Stanford Coaches Tara and Steve Danielson present a practice package that is loaded with ball control drills that can be used by athletes on their own or incorporated into a team practice . These drills will make players confident ball handlers. Coaches Tara and Steve Danielson concentrate on hand and footwork development using the following drills:

  • stationary hand and stick drills intended as a warm-up
  • a progression of stationary drills adding movement and footwork
  • five-meter drills
  • seven cone drills using a bigger area
  • partner drills

The presentation begins with comprehensive, dynamic team stretching and warm-up exercises. These exercises are presented with enough detail that a coach can easily add them to their program.

Hand skill development begins with a 10-minute warm-up routine. Using four simple techniques, this drill increases confidence and ability in ball handling. The segment includes a "fast hands" exercise, which is simply moving the ball as quickly as possible from the left to right, touching the ball as quickly as possible to change its direction as efficiently as possible. The exercise continues by adding more space to the movement of the ball, moving it from foot to foot, concentrating on ball control. Quick lifts and air dribbles complete the hand skill warm-ups.

The fundamentals are combined with footwork and shooting to create progressive drills that challenge a player's dexterity and fitness. By focusing on basic movements, a coach can easily correct a player's movements, which, in turn, ensures that the player will develop strong foundational skills. Players are encouraged to start slowly and then advance to game speed, which also ensures correct execution of the technique. Beginning with basic movements, the presentation quickly progresses to a high-tempo skills drill.

In addition to providing foundational strength for individual field hockey skills, this video gives coaches and players a template for building drills that can be customized to the needs of each player. Once an athlete has learned the basics of the game, this video will help them take their performance to the next level.

Messiah College Head Coach; over 500 career victories;
2010 NCAA Division III National runner-up; 10x MAC Conference Coach of the Year;
Featuring the Messiah College Coaching Staff

Jan Trapp and the Messiah College staff take you through the techniques and drills for teaching and developing proper stick work. Coach Trapp has won over 500 games in her career at Messiah and her teams have been invited to the NCAA tournament over 20 times with 14 of those teams reaching the Final Four.

Coach Trapp's drills begin with basic principles and build up to more advanced principles. The DVD begins with stationary stick work drills involving the ready position concentrating on footwork and balance - the keys to good stickwork.

Trapp slowly adds movement to the drills combining ball handling, footwork, passing with spin, slip, flop, pull back and lift techniques. The progression ends with shots out of the movements. Each drill trains the players to keep their body and sticks low to ensure consistent ball control. These drills will help your athletes build speed and quickness while carrying the ball down the field and to put more drive behind their shot.

Building on the ball control drills, the staff demonstrates drills to improve passing and receiving skills while on the move. This segment includes a 2-on-0 drill to develop ball control, passing and receiving skills and a five-point drill for receiving passes on the move from a longer distance. These drills reinforce low body position, soft hands, passing accuracy and timing. Using these drills, your players will learn to cut to get open and receive a pass with pressure or get practice intercepting passes.

All of the skills taught throughout the video culminate in a 3-on-2, 2-on-1 drill that simulates game action.

This comprehensive DVD will provide you with the tools you need to bring out the best in your athletes' ball control skills!

and Steve Danielson, Stanford University Assistant Coach;
member of the U.S. National Field Hockey Team (1989-2010), member of Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games

Stanford Coaches Tara and Steve Danielson show you how to develop a team that uses sharp moves and quick passes to play fast-paced, attacking hockey. Improve ball-handling confidence as well as hand and footwork with drills like:

  • passing patterns to goal, including skip passing
  • attack and defensive build-up
  • small game scenarios
  • counter attack options (3v3 possessions)
  • large game scenarios

This natural progression from individual to team skills helps to refine what players already know.

The video opens with a series of comprehensive, dynamic team stretching and warm-up exercises. These exercises are presented with enough detail that a coach can easily add them to their program.

Stanford works from the philosophy of "Fail Forward and Succeed." To illustrate how this philosophy is out into practice, this video includes a high-tempo, quick-paced training session . Limiting the amount of time spent on each exercise increases repetitions and encourages players to perform at their highest level. Consistently practicing at true game speed provides the correct conditions so that each player will eventually find success while practicing these "high-tempo" drills. The "high-tempo" skills carry forward throughout the practice session, forming the foundation for a fast-paced, game-speed practice.

Practice begins with passing patterns to goal, emphasizing basic skill execution for passing and shooting, including proper stance, body position, and correctly receiving and delivering the ball in a "high-tempo" format. Drills progress from stationary passing to passing to a ball receiver who is on the move, working on leading away from the passer when receiving the pass. In each case, the passer needs to perform a pre-scan before passing. Continuing the progression, the shooter now receives the ball with their stick perpendicular to the goal and their feet facing toward the goal. This is a very difficult technique but it's broken down into its simplest components, making it easy to understand and practice.

Throughout the practice session, players are given strategies for ball handling in an effort to find open space and succeed in moving the ball downfield. Reinforcing basic concepts, the Stanford coaches deliver valuable tips that can be applied to any level of play.

Coaches and athletes alike will learn to train in tight spaces and then transition to more open spaces. This teaches players to quickly add width and depth to the game and reap benefits from fast breaks. Players learn how to use open space, a change in speed and running off the ball to their advantage.

Coaches Steve and Tara Danielson share several drills that can be easily implement into any practice session. This is a must-have DVD for any coach who wants to see immediate improvement and results.

Coach Jagday spends minimal time on individual drills, preferring to work on improving first touch skills within game-like situations. He expertly divides the field and player positions into interlocking, triangular groups of three. FHD-04781B: with Shiv Jagday, FIH accredited coach;
former Canadian and USA national team coach, coaching national teams in the Olympic Games, World Cups and the Pan Am Games

Former Canadian and USA National Team coach Shiv Jagday shows how to develop tackling skills and how to efficiently critique and identify areas of improvement. From his perspective, tackling is position- and field-location specific; one technique does not suit every situation.

In this video you will learn multiple tackling techniques and the best field position for each tackle.

Training for proper tackling starts with being aware of what side of the field you're on and where you want to force the ball. Therefore, an important part of training includes dividing and identifying the different parts of the field. Coach Jagday demonstrates how dividing the field makes it easier for players to understand the best tackle to use.

Jagday shares drills that efficiently teach players and coaches alike the correlation between stance and the various types of tackles. Shadow dancing and footwork drills - with and without the ball - help players develop these important fundamental skills. The defensive stance must allow the player to recover quickly from their tackling efforts.

Once players understand the connection between the tackle they use and the specific part of the field they're on, practice progresses to 1-on-1, 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 drills that better reflect game-like conditions. Coach Jagday explains how tackling is more than simply taking the ball away from the offense. Tackling strategies include tactics, planned footwork, close shadowing of the ball handler, timing, shifting your hands and grip as well as channeling the ball away from the areas of greatest threat.

Knowing precisely when to tackle or when to commit is probably more important than knowing how to tackle.

This presentation will strengthen the tackling skills of more experienced players and lay a strong foundation for new players. Coach Jagday gives coaches the insight to efficiently correct and improve their players.

Tracey Griesbaum coaches you through over 15 drills to build your run stifling defense from the ground up. Griesbaum explains defensive responsibilities for each position and demonstrates drills that can be used for every player on your team. From defenders to forwards, each of your players will learn how to apply pressure to create turnovers and reduce goals scored on your team. Starting with on-ball pressure, Griesbaum demonstrates fundamental drills that build the foundation for a solid defender. Moving into defensive simulations, Griesbaum teaches you drills that simulate game occurrences so your players are prepared when it comes game time. Griesbaum also takes you through intercepting drills to help teach your players how to break up passing lanes to force turnovers. Finally, Griesbaum shows a series of drills for your forwards to help them apply pressure on your opponent's back line. With this instructional field hockey DVD, you will be able to build your team's defense, just like Griesbaum's 2008 top-10 defensive team.

Coach Missy Meharg's concept is based on setting the field hockey field up as a grid. This is done for three reasons; for teaching, statistics and ball patterns. Coach Meharg divides the field into four areas: the attack quarter of the field, attacking middie quarter, defensive middie quarter and the defensive quarter. From there the field is divided vertically into zones 1, 2 and 3, with 3 being the outside areas. The same concept goes for the area around the goal for goalkeepers. To aid visual learners, Meharg uses a Subbuteo board to divide the field visually and to show each of the steps in detail. The eight steps begin with defense in the attacking quarter, followed by defense in the midfield and into the circle. Step 4 deals with defensive penalty corners. Step 5 and 6 focus on attack out of the defensive quarter and attacking in the midfield. The final two steps are the attack into the circle and attacking penalty corners. Each step is carefully broken down and analyzed by Meharg. Finally, the use of actual game video shared in this excellent instructional DVD allows you to see game applications of this strategic 8-step plan.
