    Stanford Goalkeeper Coach Patrick Cota presents a system of skills and drills to develop a sharper, quicker, more efficient goalkeeper. Coach Cota covers the following concepts:

    • a progression of dynamic footwork movement
    • a progression of dynamic movement, right and left hand with stick and glove
    • a progression of dynamic movement, right hand stick
    • leg guard drills with progression to slide
    • rapid fire shots all directions
    • goalkeepers' stance

    The presentation begins with stretching and warm-ups for the entire team. A quick review of goalkeeping techniques gives a high level summary of what will be covered before the individual techniques are explained and broken down to their basic components and theory.

    Coach Cota details the goalkeeper's stance and the importance of executing it correctly. The stance is explained so that goalkeepers can achieve explosive energy when making saves. This gives players the ability to clear the ball after the save, which effectively eliminates the opportunity for rebound shots. Employing the philosophy of clearing the ball on each save is a key component to being a successful goalkeeper.

    Proper footwork is key to making saves and clearing the ball. Coach Cota provides detailed instruction beginning with the stationary stance and concluding with the correct technique to handle each specific shot and exploding through the saves. The goalkeeper is taught to drive through the shots, maintaining balance in an effort to handle any shot that comes.

    The workout progresses to reactionary saves. With quick passes, the point of attack may change which means the goalkeeper must adjust with quick, sharp moves and not be caught out of position. Coach Cota challenges goalkeepers by not announcing what shot they will be required to save. These shots are practiced at game speed.

    In addition to providing a direction on goal-tending techniques that builds upon the basics, this presentation explains how and why a given movement is best suited for a specific shot.

    This presentation gives a wealth of information to train someone who, on many occasions, is the last player left to defend the goal.

    Training Plan
    Coach Kagan discusses how he and the Maryland Coaching Staff plan out the training protocol for the upcoming season. All workouts done throughout the year complement each other; speed workouts, agility drills and strength training are all included and revolve around the underlying component of maintaining proper conditioning. From post-season workouts, to spring training, and in-season workouts, Kagan describes in length of what is expected during each period of training including rep ranges, frequency of strength training sessions and how often players should be running.

    Dynamic & Pre-Game Warm-Ups
    Whereas most warm-up plans consist of long periods of time, Kagan's plan is really brief with the focus on getting the body warmed up and ready for the game. Long periods of stretching and warm-up drills can often extend the length of a game being counterproductive to what the goal at hand is. In the drills and stretches included, players are able to be completely ready for peak performance at a much faster rate than before.

    Speed & Agility Training
    Speed training is based on the two mechanisms of strike frequency and stride length. Strike frequency is how quickly the nervous system can fire and how quickly you can drive yourself to the desired outcome. While stride length is more of strength and production you put on each movement. Kagan covers how to use those mechanisms in seven specific speed drills as well as 18 agility drills designed to maximize your training sessions. These drills include sport specificity to enhance player morale during periods of strenuous drills.

    Conditioning
    The goal for athletes is to play at high intensity for extended periods of time. While conditioning is usually only related to the aspect of being able to run, you must be able to prepare athletes to not become injured. Running drills are usually kept short in duration and require change of pace while alternating intensity to mimic the strain of a full game.

    The presentation opens with a warm-up drill designed to get the players moving. Called "Our House," the drill is a possession game played in a limited space using a limited number of athletes. The offense learns to concentrate on passing and field position in an effort to maintain possession of the ball.

    To recreate the pressure of game-speed shooting while simultaneously encouraging each player to deliver 100 percent in ball handling and sprinting, Coach Gottung presents "Under Pressure Shooting and Fitness." This is an outstanding drill with built-in motivation guaranteed to bring out your athletes' maximum effort! This drill is easily scalable and can be customized to concentrate player's competitiveness where you feel they need it most.

    The "1v1 Lane" is one of those rare drills that allows you to create the specific defensive situation needed to practice while still providing the game-speed competitiveness your attack players need for their skill development. By creating a defensive start that simulates a "re-defend" situation, coaches can help their athletes develop the skill of defending from a defensively disadvantaged position. Another problem that the re-defend often creates are defensive penalties. Being able to focus efforts on this specific setting helps defenders improve body positioning and footwork so that they can defend successfully without drawing penalties.

    Coach Gottung highlights the importance of making competitiveness a high priority during practices. She does a good job of highlighting the specifics skills that are needed for teams to be competitive within each of these drills she presents. Finally, she demonstrates the importance of moving seamlessly from one drill to the next one using the skills that have been presented.

    Step onto the field with this All-Access inside look into Beth Bozman's Duke Field Hockey Team as she welcomes you to a series of three practices where you get to see all the workings of a championship program. The emphasis and activities of each practice change as the team work's their way through the week and comes closer to a weekend of games.

    In the first practice, Bozman's team has just come off two games over the weekend followed by a off-day, so Bozman leads them through a more vigorous practice aimed at conditioning and skill work. Jeff Houser, the speed and agility coach at Duke (and a former Olympian), starts the practice with an anerobic threshold conditioning workout, which builds up the players' staminia.

    Next, Bozman switches to skill work, running a 3-station ball support drill, passing, and shooting drills that incorporate a ball lift to develop soft hands on the receiving end before the shot. Moving to defense, Bozman runs a defense drill that reinforces pushing the attacker to the hash marks, which will give the defense a chance to recover and organize. The drill starts 1v1, then moves to 2v2 allowing the defense to work on reading the lead attack player. You will hear Bozman pass along coaching tips and strategies for the defense, as well as for the offense that will lead to corner opportunities.

    Bozman runs a 3v2 No Touch game reinforcing tracking skills and getting to the low defender as quick as possible. The goal is to develop sharp passing combinations to isolate the defense and create more 2-on-1 situations in games.

    A skeleton passing drill closes practice. This drill sharpens cutting patterns and ball pace.

    In the second practice, the team is led through more team drills that incorporate game play into the practice. This prepares the players for games both physically and mentally. The practice features drills for ball movement, circle defense and the press.

    Day two's passing and shooting skill work includes a 5-Man Passing drill that focuses on backing away, covering passing lanes and scoring when the numbers are in your favor. A weave and shoot drill works on spacing and getting a number of shots in a short amount of time.

    Moving on to defense, Bozman runs a defense and recovery drill that will help your defense slow down the attack in the circle and, by using the body, defend a space that will force the attack outside.

    Bozman shows her Fall Away Press, where you will see the importance of moving on the front end of the pass, so that you don't lose your chance to step up and press.

    Bozman's third practice is the final practice before departing for games. She lowers the intensity and places the emphasis on preparing for the upcoming games. Drills during this practice are specifically tailored to mimic schemes that opponents run so Bozman's squad is prepared to face them on game day.

    Grid passing helps with fading off the pass, using soft hands and keeping the passes flat. Warm-up shooting, redirection passing, long hit and skeleton passing keying on fakes are a sampling of the skills that Bozman drills.

Coach Bustin concludes by critiquing the action of the players, reinforcing the strategy she's trying to encourage and soliciting player feedback. .

    The "1v1 Defensive Technique" section concentrates on the defender's skill at delaying and influencing the play through careful defensive techniques. Coach Bustin shows how to challenge offensive players with simple tips like closing quickly and breaking down when you trap, keeping your feet under your hips, running to close and using a drop [step] to get under the ball carrier.

    Using two players attacking the goal, the "Shots, Rebounds and Deflections Drill" shows how to position offensive players to receive passes, intercept rebounds and score with deflections from passes that originate from higher on the field. Coach Bustin concludes by critiquing the action of the players, reinforcing the strategy she's trying to encourage and soliciting player feedback. .

    The "1v1 Defensive Technique" section concentrates on the defender's skill at delaying and influencing the play through careful defensive techniques. Coach Bustin shows how to challenge offensive players with simple tips like closing quickly and breaking down when you trap, keeping your feet under your hips, running to close and using a drop [step] to get under the ball carrier.

    Using two players attacking the goal, the "Shots, Rebounds and Deflections Drill" shows how to position offensive players to receive passes, intercept rebounds and score with deflections from passes that originate from higher on the field. Focusing on play within the circle, this drill encourages increased movement in an effort to make something happen in front of the goal.     The 4-Goal Game forces players to quickly develop attack and defense awareness by limiting the playing area. Developing each player's vision is at the heart of this drill. Some of the core fundamental skills that are challenged and developed in this small-game drill include passing accuracy, being able to see your target early, seeing lanes, scanning and pre-scanning for passes.

    The 3v3 diagonal small-game drills are effective at creating game-speed transition tempo. Working from a 3v3 format, each team attacks a goal in front of them as well as a goal to their right. This makes each team responsible for protecting a diagonal space and attacking a diagonal space. Since the space is limited, players learn to develop the ability to quickly scan and pre-scan so that their first touch is on target. This drill improves game performance in many key areas including tracking, long hit, side-in possession, the ability to move the ball, and keeping possession and break out against a higher number of defenders.

    The 3v3 half court-to-goal drill uses the goalie as well as three attack players and three defenders. One of the strengths of this drill is that it facilitates communication between the defenders and their goalie. Possession alternates between each team ensuring that the goalie communicates with each group of players, as determined by possession. Transition, tipping, goalie communication and shooting on goal are some of the key development features of this drill.

    Coach Bustin's presentation concludes with a 6v4 continuous game. Using only half of the field, this drill encourages offensive possession and strategies that will help attackers see where and how be in position to tip or get the ball off the defender. The offense can keep the ball speed up in order to shift the defense and create opportunities.

    Coach Bustin has done an outstanding job creating exercises that will challenge and build players skills at any level of field hockey.

Warm-ups start with players kicking the ball to each other. Correct foot position and striking the ball with a controlled, deliberate clearing kick is emphasized.

    Moving into shooting on goal, the tempo and skill set builds from simply stopping the ball to clearing the ball to a specific area of the field. Players are shown how to clear the ball after a shot and to direct the ball away from the center of the field to the outside of the shooting circle. Goalies who are able to master the techniques shown will effectively decrease their opponents scoring opportunities.

    Coach Soto introduces cones that the goalie must move through before stopping shots. This increases the challenge to the goalie and helps them build confidence in their footwork. Soon the drills develop to include shots from two shooters. The drill is structured to force the goalie to quickly move from one side of the net to the other.

    All of the drills shown are strictly defined as goalie drills, therefore all shooting is performed to build a goalie-specific skill.

    The drills continue to progress by using several players shooting from multiple spots on the field. The goalie must be able to quickly react to the ball, set in a good athletic stance and successfully clear the ball.

    Additionally, this DVD provides clearly defined instruction for defending against a break away and 1-on-1 situations.

    Defense
    Defenders begin working on their individual defensive body positioning against an attacker. This progresses to defending the circle as the attack enters from different positions on the field. The defense is shown how and where to channel the attack so that they are forced to take shots away from the center, low angle. Use this drill to develop hand-eye coordination, work on transition skills, footwork, elimination skills and more.

    These drills and exercises will provide less experienced players with a solid foundation from which to build upon. More experienced players will also benefit by using the details that Coach Steele explains throughout the entire presentation.

    Training for proper tackling starts with being aware of what side of the field you're on and where you want to force the ball. Therefore, an important part of training includes dividing and identifying the different parts of the field. Coach Jagday demonstrates how dividing the field makes it easier for players to understand the best tackle to use.

    Jagday shares drills that efficiently teach players and coaches alike the correlation between stance and the various types of tackles. Shadow dancing and footwork drills - with and without the ball - help players develop these important fundamental skills. The defensive stance must allow the player to recover quickly from their tackling efforts.

    Once players understand the connection between the tackle they use and the specific part of the field they're on, practice progresses to 1-on-1, 2-on-1 and 3-on-1 drills that better reflect game-like conditions. Coach Jagday explains how tackling is more than simply taking the ball away from the offense. Tackling strategies include tactics, planned footwork, close shadowing of the ball handler, timing, shifting your hands and grip as well as channeling the ball away from the areas of greatest threat.

    Knowing precisely when to tackle or when to commit is probably more important than knowing how to tackle.
